New Year Website Checklist

The start of a new year is the perfect time for planning ahead and getting ready to meet your goals.

If January is a quiet time in your business, like it is for me, why not make the most of your time by taking a look at your website and making those small but significant tweaks that will help it work harder for you.

If you have a website, you're paying for your domain name and hosting each year, so let's make sure that investment is working for you. The whole point of having a website is to have a virtual storefront so people can browse through and see if you have what they need. They need to be able to find you, and you need to keep your store tidy, presentable and a pleasure to spend time in so shoppers will want to stick around and make a purchase.

Below I’ve listed a few quick questions to ask yourself. Better still, have a friend or business colleague look over your website with fresh eyes and give you their feedback.

Website Checklist

  • Is your website mobile friendly? Does it display well on phones and tablets?
Most people view websites on mobile devices, so having your site display well will reduce your bounce rate.

  • Is your brand identity (logo, fonts, colours, aesthetic) consistent across all pages?
A cohesive visual brand identity elevates people's perception of your business and helps identify you.

  • Do you have a current professional photo of you or your team?
Showing a professional photo of you or your team helps people to connect with you, human to human.

  • Is your contact information up to date?
If people can't contact you, they can't buy from you.

  • Do all your contact forms work?
    Ditto on my previous point.

  • Do all your navigation links work?
Broken links in your navigation are simply frustrating, and will cause people to bounce off your site.

  • Is your location prominently displayed on your homepage and contact page?
Even for online business, people like to know where businesses they intend to deal with are located.
And Google will show places in the viewers proximity first.

  • Have you added ALT tags to your photos so they can be read by search engines?
Labelling your ALT tags helps the accessibility of your site and also helps improve your search ranking.
