Tell us about yourself

I am a mum of two teenage girls.... I think it’s interesting that that was the first thing that I thought to write!! I love being a mum and I'm so proud of who my girls are as individual people, but that’s just it, they are individuals. I had to really think about who I am as an individual. I am a creative and love all things beauty. Being creative seems to flow into all aspects of my life. It can be planning an outfit with hair and makeup to suit the look to cooking and baking pretty cakes and desserts, to something simple like arranging a colourful bouquet of flowers. It’s these simple creative pleasures that bring me joy. I’ve been in the makeup and beauty therapy industry for over 30 years. I think looking after our skin is so important and I know for me personally, my skin care and makeup routine is that time for myself. I try to read a book and do yoga, but then that’s where being a mum takes over and doesn't always happen.

Tell us about your business

My business is Amanda Maree Makeup. I offer a mobile makeup service for bridal parties, events, photoshoots and I also offer makeup lessons. I also offer hair services for events and photoshoots. My makeup lessons can be one on one or in groups. They are for all ages from tweens wanting to learn how to do makeup for school, work or dancing. As well as for adults wanting to refresh their skills and learn makeup looks and techniques that suit them.

What's the heart behind your business?

My aim is to make people not only look good but feel good. I want getting your makeup done to be a pampering relaxing experience. So I always begin with a luxury skin prep, which all my clients say is their favourite part. My style of makeup is soft glam. We all love that transformation and the confidence makeup can give you, but I want people to feel beautiful as themselves and to bring out their natural beauty rather than cover it up. There is no need for heavy cakey makeup when things like dark circles can be colour corrected instead. By using the right colours and techniques, features can be enhanced and you can look the best version of yourself rather than makeup looking like a mask.

What does a typical, or ideal, work day look like for you?

My day can sometimes start as early as 3am! I get up and always take the time to get myself ready by doing my hair and makeup. I do a quick check of emails and instagram/Facebook messages and reply to those. As I am mobile, I drive to my clients house or location. This could be up to 2 hours driving for a wedding or simply round the corner if local. Once there I set up, do my clients makeup, try to remember to take photos and videos, then pack up again and travel to the next job. Each client takes 1.5 hours. After my clients are done I come home and wash all my brushes and restock my kit. This can take over an hour to do. I go through all my photos and videos and put together some content for my socials. Then check my messages and emails again and confirm the appointments for the next day.

Have there been any struggles in your business that you've overcome? What did you learn from them?

There are a few things that I have learned. Firstly, that I can't compare myself to other makeup artists. It’s so easy to think we are not good enough and others are better, but that’s not a healthy mindset to have. Secondly, my style is what I am good at and that might mean I’m not the right makeup artist for everyone and that’s ok.

What's been a highlight for you in business?

I love all aspects of being a makeup artist. I get joy out of teaching a group of ladies how to do their own makeup, I really enjoy being part of a team on a photoshoot and I am always honoured when a bride chooses me for their special day. But I think what really makes me excited is when I get a thoughtful review the next day or I'm recommended by someone to a friend or when someone loves their makeup so much they rebook me for their next event. I mean that’s a win!

What advice would you give others wanting to start a business?

Do it your way, have your own unique style and do it well. It's important to constantly learn, but for your own self growth. Don't be hard on yourself or compare yourself to others.
