Tell us about yourself
I grew up in Kurrajong and after moving away for a few years, my partner Grant and I have settled back in the area that we love. It is so great being closer to our family, especially since recently having our daughter, Eve, so definitely a special time and absolutely trying to soak it ALL up.
Tell us about your business
The shop Boho Lane came about from a desire to be creative, bringing everything I love together in one spot and being a one stop shop for all things Boho, including clothing, jewellery and accessories. An absolute passion of mine though is perfume and more recently clean and natural fragrance ranges, which you will see more of in the future for Boho Lane - Watch this space! I hope we provide a lovely shopping experience. I always envisioned the boutique to be a sensory experience, which I think we have achieved. I just love when people comment on how lovely the boutique smells as mentioned, scent is my passion in particular.
What's the heart behind your business?
My 'Why' was initially motivated by my desire to have a creative outlet, while I also continued to work full time within Recruitment (currently on Mat Leave). I have loved bringing this space to Richmond and I think my 'Why' will continue to evolve with some exciting things on the horizon in store for the shop and the direction I'd like to take it.
What does a typical, or ideal, work day look like for you?
A typical day currently revolves around Eve as I have her with me in the shop, however any overnight orders are the priority to get out first thing. While we are hidden away down the lane of the Orange Grove Mall, this means we are lucky to have a lovely little sunny courtyard, so we enjoy soaking up the sun with many cups of tea and Mum's baked goods ;). You will find us floating around the shop and we absolutely love meeting everyone and having a chat with our customers.
Have there been any struggles in your business that you've overcome? What did you learn from them?
I started my business during Covid and as you would expect, have been affected by lockdowns as a result, in addition to flooding twice and now more recently things have been different again with the economy shifting. I have learnt that you can't predict or control things, especially in business and more importantly, I have developed a newfound respect for small business owners in particular - you are all amazing! I try to not sweat the small things and am determined to make my little dream come true, staying strong with my vision, however I have my days.
What's been a highlight for you in business?
The wonderful and lifelong friendships I have made along the way and being able to share this experience with my amazing Mum, Lorraine and partner Grant (my website guru). It has been so lovely doing this together, something I will always cherish and be grateful for. The support I have received from my friends and family has been so humbling and unwavering - even when I have faltered.
What advice would you give others wanting to start a business?
I would say go for it, however I think it is VERY important to be clear on your 'WHY' so that during the tough times you can draw strength from this, remaining passionate and determined. I think I went into this venture as a bit of a 'dreamer' - I probably still am! (I'd say most of my family and friends thought I was crazy) and they were probably right! However, despite the difficulties it has been a wonderful experience, gaining things from it that I never expected and some beautiful friendships, experiences and connections.
